NYBA welcomes Sensei Jeff Christian from the MUZOSA BUJIKAN DOJO OF NYC to host a special class in the art of Bujikan.
The Bujinkan Dojo was organized in the early 1970’s by Masaaki Hatsumi. This organization is comprised of nine distinct schools of ancient Japanese martial arts, with traceable histories from the 9th century and earlier. Hatsumi-sensei inherited these ryuha from his teacher, the late Toshitsugu Takamatsu, in 1972.The Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu system of martial arts emphasizes natural and relaxed body movement. This martial art is comprised of authentic techniques from ancient samurai and ninja combat arts, taught within both their historical contexts as well as within the modern context.
Jeff began training in 1983 under Stephen Hayes and then in 1986 began studying under Larry Turner and Kevin Schneider. He received his godan (5th degree black belt) in 1993 and began teaching in NYC in 1994, when he started Muzosa with Tim Brown. Jeff received his ju-godan (15th degree black belt) in 2009. He was awarded the rank of daishihan in 2018.

DOJO RULES & CLASS ETIQUETTE SPECIFICALLY FOR TAMESHIGIRI
Please feel free to ask any relevant questions, but please refrain from chatting or mimicking the technique when instructors are teaching or demonstrating. Please be quiet while people are cutting – don’t be a distraction.
Be on-time for the beginning of class. If you arrive in class late, change off the Dojo floor, bow in and wait for the instructor to acknowledge you before you join the class.
Please keep all personal items on one side of the dojo – be sure not to leave a mess.
Bow to the Shomen before entering and when leaving the dojo space.
While handling live (sharp) blades – NEVER FOOL AROUND WITH SWORDS. When handing the sword to someone, hold the sword upright and turn the cutting edge towards yourself, then slowly hand the weapon to the other person. When holding a sharp weapon keep the blade down, in front of you, and off to the side. DO NO WALK AROUND WAVING A SWORD.
If the sword gets stuck in the target – DO NOT WRESTLE IT OUT – WAIT FOR AN INSTRUCTOR TO ASSIST YOU.
If the tameshigiri stand topples over or the mat needs to be readjusted – DON’T PICK IT UP – WAIT FOR AN INSTRUCTOR TO ASSIST YOU.
Mat fees should be paid before or at the beginning of class (please don’t make us chase you for payment).
If you cannot make it to class for an extended period of time, please be considerate and let one of the administrators know.
Be respectful to your fellow classmates and instructors. We are all here to learn.
If you must leave while the instructor is still teaching, excuse yourself quietly and bow out. When leaving or entering class, always walk behind people for safety. Do not interrupt the class.
Be mindful of the space around you, do not stand near the cutting stand – unless you are helping with the cleaning or pegging the next mat for tameshigiri.
Practice self-control. Arguments, harassment or loss of temper can result in expulsion from the Dojo. Never use a weapon in a threatening manner towards another student or instructor.
When borrowing class equipment, please be respectful and take good care of it. All borrowed equipment needs to be put back into the equipment bag at the end of the class. Students borrowing uniforms are responsible for washing them and folding them after class.
