Bon-Odori (盆踊り) is part of the traditional celebration of Oban in Japan.

Originated as Nembuts-Odori by Kuya Shonin (903-972), a priest of the Pure Land sect of Buddhism. Its purpose is to attain salvation in Amina Buddha’s Pure Land through ritual dance and recitation of Nembutsu / Namu- Ami-Dabutsu (Namu Amida Buddha).

Each region has a local dance and min’yo folk songs. A Yagura stage with Chochin lanterns and Taiko drumming are very important character of the festival.

Since its beginning Bon-Odori has developed into a community entertainment with group folk singing and dancing as its main feature. It is the biggest summer family event in Japan and is always accompanied by many vendors of food, games, candies, masks and crafts
