Fred Shimizu, a Japanese-American, native New Yorker, came to iaido late in life after retiring from basketball and long-distance running.  His interest in cultural Japan extends to art, antiques, literature and especially film studies on which he has written extensively and amassed a collection of over 800 titles. He began at NYBA in 2010 and felt fortunate to attain Yondan ranking in 2018.  This marked the point where realizing the depth of our system, he felt his learning began.

He is of the belief that,

“Mindfulness, physical and mental coordination and discipline, spiritual awareness, are uncovered individually but practiced in the communal setting of a dojo. The sword reveals character.  ”

“You do not really learn Iaido – the sword teaches you.”
