Just because you don’t live in NYC doesn’t mean you can’t train with us…

During the COVID-19 global pandemic we were forced to find alternative ways to continue our training. We eventually migrated online and found that a combination of online classes, combined with instructor feedback, as well as 1-on-1 classes were extremely successful for new students. So we began to offer "Remote Memberships" to anyone who wished to learn and practice in Ryushin Shouchi Ryu (RSR) with us online, understanding that not everyone has the opportunity or the chance to train due to time and location. Eventually we moved over to Patreon to make it easier to manage our online classes.

We offer a unique opportunity to study this rare form of kenjutsu/iaido online – no experience necessary, just a willingness to learn. Classes are always taught by licensed instructors in RSR who will provide basic instruction in these techniques. People attending will be required to sign our legal waiver and anyone under 18 will need a parent/guardian's permission.

We are also offering online KYUDO classes as well 1X per week (Thursdays – classes will be recorded as well).

SOME BASIC PATREON FAQS…

  • To start, just yourself and a willingness to learn – gym clothes are perfectly fine to start, we also suggest a pair of knee pads (volleyball are ok). If you don’t have a sword you can use a lightsaber, ruler, dowel, or a wooden spoon, and if you don’t have those we can show you how to just use your hands. Eventually we suggest getting your own equipment.

We suggest using a wooden bokken (Japanese white oak is preferred), with a tsuba (guard), and a plastic saya. We normally train with iaito (practice swords – they look real, but are not sharp) for safety. Live blades (sharp swords) are not allowed for beginners as they are extremely sharp and dangerous. We also suggest wearing an obi (belt), as well. Eventually we can help you find a full uniform (dogi, hakama, and obi).

  • Equipment can be adapted for online training – as the Yumi (bows) are very large we suggest using simple resistance bands to reflect the draw of the bow. You can also use a simple dowel which can mimic the feel of an arrow (we can assist you in setting these up for your practice).

  • Otani Sensei used to say that the hardest part of training was just showing up. Once you take the first step you’re on your way…we always suggest taking our intro class which is usually on the first Monday of every month. We don’t really have beginners classes, students practice and instructors will help them understand the basic techniques of Ryushin Shouchi Ryu.

  • These are the different levels of access you get to our instruction and exclusive content. We have several tiers that are just to support our efforts ($1 – $5 per month) and our online classes begin at $10 – $50 per month. Visit the NYBA PATREON page for details.

  • The simple answer is no, however, if you wish to hold rank in RSR you will be required to join their organization which involves paying annual dues, testing and certificate fees (all determined by the Honbu in Japan). We are permitted to grade up to the level of Sandan (3rd DAN). NYBA usually holds rank testing every 6 months – students don’t ask to test, but are rather asked by the instructors when they demonstrate a solid understanding of the techniques.

  • We hold approximately 4 classes per week (2 in-person in the physical dojo in NYC and 2 online with a dedicated instructor.
