2025 National Cherry Blossom Festival – 63rd Sakura Matsuri (Washington DC)
Washington DC is having their Cherry Blossom Festival on Saturday, April 12th, and the Maryland Dojo will be doing a demonstration of Naginata and Kendo at the martial arts stage.
They are looking for volunteers to perform rhythm Naginata or Zen Nihon Kata. Positions are first come first serve, so please let me or Yuri know as soon as possible!

The National Cherry Blossom Festival will start March 20 to April 13. During this period, numerous events will be held and the highlights of the event are the parade which will be held on Saturday, April 12 and the Sakura Matsuri Street Festival held on both Sat. & Sun. April 12 & 13. Sakura Matsuri Street Festival will be held on Pennsylvania Ave between 3rd to 7th Streets NW and attracts 40k people.

JAPANESE SPRING FESTIVAL 2025
NYBA will be performing an embu during the 2025 JAPANESE SPRING FESIVAL at the Port Washington Public Library – There will be a sword exhibit as well as a variety of traditional performances, including dancers, musicians, and more.

KANJIRO SHIBATA SENSEI XXI 2025
Kyudo Assembly with Kanjuro Shibata XXI Sensei
After the retirement of Shibata Sendai XX in October 2011, his adopted son, Shibata Kanjuro XXI, was recognized as the 21st in the Shibata Lineage and assumed the duties of Imperial Bow Maker to the Emperor of Japan. Sensei lives in Kyoto, Japan where he has operated a yumi or bow-making workshop for over two decades.
This year Kyudo Boston will be hosting the Kyudo Assembly with Kanjuro Shibata XXI Sensei. Along with practical instruction, Sensei will share his extensive knowledge of yumi care and construction.

NYBA JAPAN TOUR 2025
NYBA is going on a Budo tour in Japan this September 2025! The tour will be for 10 days (4 days in Kyoto and 6 days in Tokyo). We will first study Kyudo and yumi making with Shibata XXI Sensei in Kyoto and then take a Shinkansen (bullet train) to Tokyo for the Asayama Ichiden Ryu Training Camp with Seki Sensei.
Students are not required to attend all the events and are welcome to organize their own independent travel agenda meeting up with the larger group when they can.

Kanjuro Shibata Sensei XXI
After the retirement of Shibata Sensei XX in October 2011, his adopted son (i.e. his son-in-law), Shibata Kanjuro XXI, took over as the official head of Zenko International – the multi-national umbrella organization of Shibata-style KYUDO. Shibata Sensei is a 21st generation master bowmaker, archer, and is also a 4th generation official bowmaker to the Emperor of Japan in the Shibata family lineage.

What’s included in this ticket:
Three days of Asayama Ichiden Ryu training
The training will mainly focus on Kenjutsu. However, we will also have time to train Iai (and Shunjō staff techniques) too. Certificates will be awarded to those participating in all three training days.
Rental of training katana (bokutō, iaitō, shunjō, etc.)
You only need to bring your training gear (dogi, hakama, inner obi, outer obi). However,
we might not have the perfect length katana (and staff) for you, so you can bring your own training equipment (bokutō, iaitō, etc.) if you wishOuter Obi:
Ryokan hotel stay, meals (3 times a day), and dojo rental fees for 3 days.
You only have to arrive on time at the venue on the first day,
and everything else will be prepared for you.Access to the archive videos of the 3-day training after the camp
We will hire a professional cameraman to film the 3-day training.
After the training camp, you will have unlimited access to the videos.

Seki Sensei will not be able to provide one-on-one instruction to everyone. Please understand that there

All activities during the training camp will be recorded, and the videos will be shared with participants and ticket purchasers.
If you do not wish to appear in the footage, please cover your face or try to avoid being on camera. We will not be applying any mosaics or edits to the footage.In the event of any damage to the Ryokan hotel or dojo, the individual responsible will be required to compensate for the full amount.
We will provide the training iaitō/bokuto/staff for training, but please bring your own training gear

Please consider this club is more of a course in Japanese Budo (Iaido (sword) and Naginata (pole-arm), where we develop skills throughout the semester. NO EQUIPMENT or EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. These classes are only open to current Pratt Students and Faculty members. As we have a limited number of bokken (wooden swords) and naginata, we do encourage our members to eventually purchase their own equipment and uniforms – we can assist in this when you are ready. Due to limited space and equipment we are limiting the class size. If you wish to register later in the semester, please send us an email or DM asking if there is an available spot.

This is a Ryushin Shouchi Ryu group practice organized by NYBA as well as a fundraising event for our friends in Ukraine. THE 2024 FALL CLASS WAITLIST IS NOW OPEN.
Unfortunately we only have a limited amount of equipment (swords and obi), as well as a limited amount of studio space – please register if you’re interested in this class and if there is an available spot we’ll let you know!
This is more of a course in Japanese Sword, where we develop skills throughout the semester. NO EQUIPMENT or EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. These classes are only open to current Pratt Students and Faculty members. As we have a limited number of bokken (wooden swords) and obi (belts), we do encourage our members to eventually purchase their own equipment and uniforms – we can assist in this when you are ready. Due to limited space and equipment we are limiting the class size. If you wish to register later in the semester, please send us an email or DM asking if there is an available spot.

AniTOMO Manga & Anime Convention
A FREE Manga & Anime Con! From the minds of BIPOC trailblazers comes a cross-pollination between Brooklyn & Japan! Hosted By Japan Village
NYBA is proud to be participating in the second annual aniTOMO CON hosted at Japan Village. This is FREE event for the public. NYBA will be performing an Ebmu (demonstration/performance) in KENJUTSU/IAIDO (Japanese sword – Ryushin Shouchi Ryu 柳心照智流).
We will also be offering numerous small workshops in Japanese Sword (limited availability so please register online).
Each workshop will last approximately 15 – 20 minutes and will include some sword basics:
– How to hold the sword properly (Tenouchi (手の内).
– How to draw the sword.
– How to cut – Suburi practice.
NYBA will lend you an obi (belt) and a bokken (wooden sword and saya).

MEMORIAL TO OTANI SENSEI
This is a special class dedicated to the founder of NYBA (formerly New York Budokai) – Otani Sensei, on the memorial of his passing in June 29, 2004.

KANJIRO SHIBATA SENSEI XXI
Kyudo Assembly with Kanjuro Shibata XXI Sensei
After the retirement of Shibata Sendai XX in October 2011, his adopted son, Shibata Kanjuro XXI, was recognized as the 21st in the Shibata Lineage and assumed the duties of Imperial Bow Maker to the Emperor of Japan. Sensei lives in Kyoto, Japan where he has operated a yumi or bow-making workshop for over two decades.
Karmê Chöling and Seiko Kyudojo look forward to welcoming you to the Kyudo Assembly with Kanjuro Shibata XXI Sensei. This is an opportunity to come together for an extended period of group practice in a retreat setting. Along with practical instruction, Sensei will share his extensive knowledge of yumi care and construction.
While there is great benefit attending the entire program, partial program attendance is possible.

TAMESHIGIRI
Target test cutting rolled up bamboo mats "makiwara targets" with live "sharp" swords. Tameshigiri (試し斬り, 試し切り, 試斬, 試切) This practice was popularized in the Edo period (17th century) for testing the quality of Japanese swords.[1] It continues to the present day, but has evolved into a martial art which focuses on demonstrating the practitioner's skill with a sword.
